A look back in time

We believe that this is earliest known photograph of 10th Romsey Scout Group. It probably dates from the 1930’s. The Cub Mistress is Miss Rachel Burford-Hancock and we are fairly certain the older gentleman sitting next to her is Col Footner, he was Scoutmaster for a while at 10th as well as being Romsey District Commissioner and County Scout Secretary.

If anyone can identify any of the faces in this photograph please contact us at info@10thromseyscouts.org.uk

Silver Acorns x4

10th Romsey Scouters receive Silver Acorns

No, not more trees to plant, but national Scouting Awards in recognition of especially distinguished service, usually after at least 20 years of service, awarded to:

Steve Woodrow – Cub Leader, who has also served over the years as District Executive member, District Cub Scout Leader, Deputy District Commissioner and District Commissioner. He has always been active in supporting District and County events and in supporting and encouraging new Leaders.

Margaret Cantelo – Cub Leader and great supporter of all Group activities. Her quiet ‘no fuss’ personality makes her a valued team member and a reliable supporter both to Steve with the Pack and to other Leaders within the Group and beyond.

Stewart Buswell – Currently Assistant Group Scout Leader, but he has run Scout Troops in West Sussex and Kent, while in Romsey he has been Assistant District Commissioner (Scouts) and Deputy District Commissioner. His dedication and experience over many years has provided support and guidance to the new and not so new Leaders in the Group and District.

Jacky Betteridge – Currently a District Cub Scout Leader and Training Advisor, but a former committee member, Cub Scout Leader and Venture Scout Leader with the Group. Her energy and enthusiasm seem to have no bounds and her support to the District and County also has not gone unnoticed.

Well done and ‘BRAVO‘ to you all.

Together you have given over 120 years service to the Movement. Long may you continue.

These St George’s Day awards were presented by former 10th Romsey member, Mark Tarry, who is now Deputy Chief Commissioner for England, who also presented the Silver Acorn to Howard Chandler of 4th Romsey.

Long service awards were made also to Sue Edwards (20 years), Jacky Betteridge and Howard Chandler (30 years) and Ian Moore (40 years).

It was also good to see other members of the Group taking important roles in the Romsey St George’s Day proceedings; Explorer Scout James Snape as Romsey’s Junior Mace Bearer and Explorer Scout Barnaby Martin speaking about this year’s charity, George’s Trust, of which he is a junior trustee, and David Shill (Assistant Explorer Scout Leader) as Parade Marshal.

Grounds Project Update – Great Progress, More Work to do

10th Romsey Scout Group are undertaking a major new project on the Grounds at our Scout HQ.

Volunteers from the Group have been working hard over many weekends since the start of the year to start the  transformation of the grounds to enable them to be more fully used for Scouting activities.

Much of the previously overgrown land has been cleared in preparation for the planting of 400 trees donated by the Woodland Trust

We are extremely grateful  to Andy Hillier, a member of our Group Executive, for putting together the plan for the planting of the grounds and for his many hours on-site with chainsaw or mini digger.

We are also very grateful to Kevin Stickley of Stickley Landscapes for the use of a mini digger which has saved countless hours of back-breaking manual work.

We have planted an avenue of Willow which in time will form an archway leading from the main field to our Camp Fire Circle.

We have built new woven fencing beside our boundary fences recycling much of the cleared timber.

The next task is to do more planting across the newly cleared site.

We are holding Grounds Days on each Sunday in March from 10am to 1pm to make the most of this year’s planting season.

If you are able to lend a hand please come along on any, or all, of these dates.

Please bring Gloves and a Spade.

We’ll supply the Tea, Coffee and Biscuits.
